Religion Equals This: Sect Holes Up in Cave to Await Doomsday

Sect Holes Up in Cave to Await Doomsday

MOSCOW (Nov. 15) - At least 30 members of a Russian doomsday cult have barricaded themselves in a remote cave to await the end of the world and are threatening to commit suicide if police intervene, officials and media said Thursday.

"They have covered the entrance and refuse to come out and are threatening to blow themselves up," an official in the local prosecutor's office told Reuters by telephone. "They threaten to detonate a gas tank and blow themselves up.

"The cult members, who include 29 adults and four children, are hidden inside a snow-covered hillside in the Penza region of central Russia. A Penza police spokeswoman said they had moved into the dug-out on November 7.

"No one wants to take on the responsibility of provoking them ... because our information is that there are children among them," said the official.

They are thought to have taken food and fuel supplies in with them and Russian television pictures from the scene showed smoke or steam coming out of a hole in the snow-covered ravine where it was built.

A police patrol was guarding the area to prevent anyone provoking them.

"They are simple Christians," a local priest, Father Georgy, told NTV television station. "They say: 'The church is doing a bad job, the end of the world is coming soon and we are all saving ourselves'."

Media reports said the cult members believed the world would end sometime in May next year. Police expected them to emerge when their supplies ran out.

After decades of state-enforced atheism under Soviet rule, many Russians and other ex-Soviet nationals have come under the influence of homegrown and foreign sects.

Many Russians have refused new passports and taxpayers' personal identification numbers, saying the figures contained "satanic" combinations of numbers.

Izvestia newspaper said the leader of the cult, Pyotr Kuznetsov, had been detained by police. It said he was a 43-year-old who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and that in the last few months he had been sleeping in a coffin.

Police took Kuznetsov to the cave to persuade his followers to come out but without success, said the newspaper.

See what I mean, "religion will do it every time". You can say what YOU want, the fact remains however, "religion is all fear based"! This just supports that truth. If these people got in touch with their "spiritual" side and looked within themselves, they might not be stuck up in some cave in the middle of nowhere waiting for armageddon. Oh well, guess they are all "pale yellows" as my friend Tara would say, or, as I would say, "just plain ass stupid".

Religion Equals Fear,
Spirituality Equals Love

I am shocked at the ignorance of some. As a Christian I do agree, I do fear the Lord, I fear tornados and hurricanes as well, that fear is, respect and love as well. The Bible tells us that Christ will come like a thief in the night, that not even angels know when He will return. Unfortunately so many misunderstand this in Timothy destruction is mentioned and it is a scary thing but not us just for those who are unsaved. I love God, people may think that it is boring or uncool but you know what, I love life and I have a lot of fun. Study before you attack. I know you aren't ignorant so be certain of the choices you make.

Unfortunately nearly everyone misunderstands the second coming. It is an individual thing. The thing that is destroyed is our old sinful self. The Christ replaces it and we are reborn to a life of vastly reduced anxiety. The Earth goes on. Generations go on. Everything goes on until the Sun burns out. Seek first the Kingdom of God. Where? Jesus says it is inside you. How much plainer could it be?

I am a christian. I think that you really have to think about what the bible tells us all. We need to understand that the end is comming it could be at anytime. People misinterprete the bible and many things in it. People just think its a book. But if you really look at it, the bible is the only book that has withstood the test of time many books have come and gone but this one has always been there. I believe every word in it. I do fear my God but I also love my God. Do you really think that many people want to listen to what he tells us to do? No they don't they want to do whatever they want. But there is one thing I do know and that is I will be with him one day while many people will be here on earth wondering where people went and why they did not go... You know many people say this is hell well they are misstaken actually they need to pick up a bible and read it. They will find the truth. BECAUSE GODS WORD IS TRUTH AND THE ONLY TRUTH!!!!!

Taoist, Buddhist and Koran writings have, as you say, "stood the test of time" and that would be more time than the Bible.
Ironically, in the responses you received one can hear the voice of indoctrination and blind leadings that allow for folks to arrive at hiding in a cave as a good idea.
Please, my brethren, let's not forget the doctrine that founded this "Judea-Christian" enclave we call home. Manifest Destiny was nothing more than a bunch of Christian white folks, justifying slaughtering and enslaving on reservations, the native peoples of this land. The Bible was again referenced for justifying enslaving Blacks, them not being "full" people (in God's eyes) and such. Damn, one of the fastest growing churches in the country, Latter Day Saints (or Mormons to most) had Black folks categorized as "descendants of Satin", believe it or not, until 1978. One of their papa-smurf elders had a revelation from God that said something close to "the civil rights movement is gonna bite us in the ass if we don't change something."
Quiet as it is kept, Christians doing what they supposedly think God told them to do has resulted in some of the most horrific acts known to man.
So, next time you "love your brother as yourself, what would Jesus do" quoting hypocrites runs into one of our brothers shabby and starving on the street, feed them like Jesus did. Where you engage prejudice, racial intolerance and/or genocide make sure you do what Jesus would have done, opposed it to His very death.
Listen, it is sad that some folks are so desperate in their attempt to make sense of the insanity in this world that they would arrive at chasing the tail of a comet (Hale-Bop) to find salvation. But are they really any different than the millions that hold up in their self-constructed caves (churches) and have the same dynamic play out, i.e., have some middle-man (preachers) between you and God telling you what God wants you to do. God wants some of you to bomb abortion clinics? Right? God wants you to manage and civilize the pagan populations of the world. This process usually focuses on people of color, and goes hand-in-hand with raping their countries resources, robbing them of the natural liberties God gave them, and pacifying them with a doctrine of salvation after death. God has, by all accounts bestowed us with one gift...free will. It is only through the free will choosing of the creator by the created that completes the circle of love that brings beauty to the universe. Any individual can do this, using any metaphors, myths or fantasies one chooses to articulate their relationship with the spirit behind the universe. The reality of that creature/creator relationship can only come to fruition through the free embrace of one for the other.
So, as we possibly make fun of, judge, ridicule or otherwise chastise them from a distance, are our brothers and sisters in a snowy cave in Russia, really doing anything more than practicing institutional religion the way it is done every Sunday. For those of your respondents that parroted back to you the Christian hell-fire-and brimstone dogma that in order to love God you must fear Him. Brothers and sisters, get real. Tell me any other relationship in which the depth of love shared/expressed is proportional to the level of fear that dominates. Love is free/freeing, open, joyful, beautiful, exciting and enhances all that is good in each of us. Fear has no place even attempting to associate itself with love. If you think you can be afraid of and love a person at the same time, either; 1)your definition/experience of love is desperately in need of refurbishing; 2) you have possibly confused the physiological "rush" of love, with the fight-or-flight physiological rush of fear; 3) you are a victim of childhood abuse and the boundaries between love and fear have evaporated due to trauma; 4)you just don't know shit from Shinolla and haven't experienced enough love to even be engaged in the conversation. Let me assure you, if no one else ever has, "love and fear are not cohorts that swing hand-in-hand enjoying what they create together." To say it even sounds stupid. To contemplate it creates so much horror for many Christians, because without the fear element to spur you on to good deeds and righteous living, you really would have to rely on the "f" word. Faith is the only tool one has to bring to fruition the experiential reality of a creature/creator loving relationship. And you can hear it in the comments of those who have responded; the fear of not being sure, of not sounding sure, of not knowing what God may do next. Oh, yea of little faith; He's/She's a good good gal/guy. If He/She really loves you infinitely, could they do any less for you than what you offer those you love? Is that offerring...fear?

Amen Brother! So called Christians and religious fanatics are pretty much the root of all the bs on this Earth. Always have been, and, will be. In a way, you have to feel sorry for these uninformed blind idiots.

Ok, well you know what "they" say, opinions are like a@%holes, everyone has one. As do those who left comments, but take no claim to them.
In every group of people, you will find some that are fanatical! Is this really a surprise? Sounds to me these folks want some attention, which is exactly what they are getting. Because we as Americans, will give all that is BS our undivided attention.
Every and any religion is a cult by definition, and has a following because people need something to belong to.
"As for me and my house we will serve the Lord," this is not because of fear or man's scare tactics but my choice based on my beliefs and faith in the one who created me.
Dad, as your daughter all I have to say personally, is all things come to an end. Even this great earth, and the existence of the people we are. Whether it be a new earth, and a rebirth of man. The Law of Entropy speaks to the fact that as soon as something is "born" it's deteriation begins or it's death.
For those of us who walk with Christ but do not subscribe to religion, should not feel the need to argue the case for Christ he proves himself!
